What is trauma?
Understanding Trauma and It's Impact
There are many different types of trauma, and the impact of each can vary depending not just on what happened, but also on how long it lasted, when it occurred, and how supported you felt afterward. No matter what form it takes, trauma is real — and healing is possible. Understanding the different types of trauma can help you make sense of your experiences and begin the process of healing the hurt.
- Acute trauma: A single overwhelming event, such as an accident, assault, or natural disaster.
- Chronic trauma: Multiple or ongoing distressing events where your safety or wellbeing was compromised repeatedly over time, like abuse, neglect, or life in a high-stress environment.
- Complex trauma: Exposure to multiple different types of trauma, often with an interpersonal or relational element.
- Developmental trauma: Traumatic experience(s) that occurred in early childhood, including attachment wounds, that disrupt emotional and/or neurological growth.
- Generational trauma: The emotional and psychological effects of trauma passed down through families or communities.
- Vicarious trauma: The emotional residue of witnessing or supporting others through their trauma.
Symptoms of Trauma
The severity and nature of trauma’s impact on an individual’s life varies from person to person, however common trauma symptoms include:
- Emotional symptoms: Anxiety, depression, anger, fear, irritability, numbness, emotional distancing, etc.
- Psychological symptoms: Flashbacks, intrusive memories, dissociation, brain fog, sleeping difficulties, nightmares, etc.
- Physical symptoms: Chronic pain, fatigue, headaches, tension, digestive issues, hormonal imbalances, etc.
- Relational symptoms: Difficulty trusting others, feeling disconnected, struggling with intimacy, emotional withdrawal, isolation, etc.
Our trauma-informed therapists work with you to identify the root cause of these symptoms, process the underlying trauma, and develop strategies to heal and regain control over your emotional, mental, physical, and relational well-being.
How Trauma Therapy Works
Because trauma impacts the body, trauma therapy is designed to go deeper than traditional talk therapy. With this in mind, we create a safe, supportive space for you to heal at your own pace and incorporate somatic techniques to help you reconnect with your body. During a trauma therapy session, we’ll help manage emotional triggers and build new, healthier responses to stress and complex emotions. We’ll also guide you in understanding how to regulate your nervous system so you can restore both your sense of safety and your sense of self.
At Richmont, we believe that trauma is nuanced, and healing is never one size fits all. To help you reach your healing goals, our multi-functional trauma experts will personalize their approach to suit your specific needs and preference. Our trauma therapists specialize in multiple different polyvagal-based, empirically validated modalities to help address the unique emotional and physiological aspects of trauma you are experiencing.
Our trauma therapy services are offered both in-person and virtually for residents of Georgia.
Types of Trauma Therapy
One of the reasons why trauma therapy is so effective is because it doesn’t just help you manage the symptoms of trauma – it helps you foster deeper resilience, emotional strength, and post-traumatic growth. From polyvagal-based techniques to somatic interventions, our multi-functional clinicians are trained to help you go from surviving to thriving. Therapeutic interventions they may utilize in your treatment include:
- EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) – A therapeutic approach that helps clients process and heal from traumatic memories.
- Somatic Experiencing – Focuses on releasing trauma stored in the body by tuning in to the body’s sensations.
- Internal Family Systems (IFS) – Helps clients identify and heal different parts of themselves impacted by trauma.
- Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT) – Aims to help clients process emotions in a safe and structured way, especially within relationships.
- Attachment-Based Therapy – Focuses on healing attachment wounds that affect relationships and emotional regulation.
- Polyvagal Theory-Informed Therapy – Focuses on the nervous system’s role in trauma and healing, aiming to restore a sense of safety and balance.
- Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy – A healing-oriented, attachment-based approach that helps clients process core emotional experiences in a safe, supportive relationship
"Mental health problems don't define who you are. They are something you experience. You walk in the rain and you feel the rain, but you are not the rain." - Matt Haig
