EMDR
EMDR
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a highly effective, evidence-based therapy designed to help individuals process and heal from trauma and distressing memories. By using bilateral stimulation—often through guided eye movements—EMDR supports the brain in reprocessing painful experiences, reducing their emotional intensity, and making space for healthier ways of coping. At the Richmont Trauma Center, several of our clinicians are extensively trained in EMDR and continue to engage in ongoing professional development to stay at the forefront of trauma-informed care. EMDR was developed in the late 1980s by Dr. Francine Shapiro, who discovered that certain eye movements could reduce the intensity of disturbing thoughts. Her pioneering research laid the foundation for EMDR to become one of the most well-researched and widely used treatments for trauma today.
