What is trauma?
Trauma can result from an overwhelming or highly stressful event—or series of events—or from our internal response to what happened. It includes the emotional, psychological, or physical impact of experiences that exceed our ability to cope. Trauma isn’t a sign that something is wrong with you; it’s a response to something distressing that happened to you. In fact, chronic or intense stress can sometimes produce symptoms similar to those of trauma. Its effects can be far-reaching, often shaping how we think, feel, behave, and relate to others—sometimes in ways we don’t immediately recognize. After trauma, a sense of safety often becomes the highest priority, even more important than connection, joy, or openness to new experiences.
What if I do not have trauma? Can I still work with an RTC therapist?
Yes, you can absolutely work with an RTC therapist, even if you don’t have a history of trauma. Our clinicians are highly skilled and equipped to support a wide range of mental health and relational concerns, collaborating with clients to address their needs and preferences.
What are the benefits of trauma-informed care?
The benefits of trauma-informed care are significant, even for those who may not have experienced severe trauma. Trauma-informed therapists are highly skilled in understanding how past experiences—whether or not they are categorized as trauma—can impact mental health, emotions, and relationships. This approach ensures that therapy is safe, respectful, and sensitive to the ways experiences shape behavior and well-being. Working with a trauma-informed clinician helps you gain deeper insight into how your past may influence your present, while also providing a supportive environment where you can heal and grow in a way that honors your unique experiences.
Why work with an RTC Clinician?
When you choose to work with an RTC clinician, you’re partnering with someone who is highly skilled and genuinely committed to your well-being. Many of our team members have earned specialized credentials in specific therapeutic modalities, so you can feel confident in the care you receive. We are recognized for our expertise and are continually working to stay current with the latest approaches in trauma care. Each of us is here because we feel called to this work, driven by a desire to help others heal and grow. With compassion at the heart of our practice, we aim to support you in your journey toward meaningful, lasting change.
Why work with an RTC Intern?
Our interns bring relevant life experience and are under the supervision of our experienced clinicians, ensuring you receive thoughtful, professional care. The lower rate for intern services makes high-quality therapy more accessible, allowing you to receive excellent support while staying within your budget.
What is your approach to working with couples?
At the Richmont Trauma Center, we take a client-centered approach to working with couples, offering a range of therapeutic modalities, including Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT) and premarital counseling. We believe in meeting couples where they are, recognizing the unique dynamics and challenges in each relationship. Our goal is to help partners build stronger emotional connections, improve communication, and teach valuable relationship skills that empower couples to grow together as they create the life they desire.
Do you provide telehealth services?
All our clinicians are trained in telehealth and can work online with clients within the state of Georgia.
Do you offer supervision for counseling students and interns?
Yes, we offer supervision for counseling students and interns. Sue Foster, Deanna Davis, and Dr. Laura Land are credentialed supervisors.
Do you offer an internship program for counseling students?
Yes, we offer a year-long internship program for counseling students that runs from May to May. Applications open in January. Preference is given to students who have a strong interest in trauma-informed care, bring meaningful life experience in the helping professions, and feel a genuine calling to support others—not just pursue a job. Training the next generation of trauma-informed counselors is a central part of our mission at the Richmont Trauma Center.
Where are you located?
We are very easy to get to – we are located in an office park near the Braves Stadium at I-75 and Windy Hill Road. Our address is 1900 The Exchange SE Atlanta Ga 30339.
Why does being trauma informed matter?
A trauma-informed counselor understands how past experiences may impact present struggles and approaches they counseling experience with sensitivity, safety, and respect. This perspective helps avoid re-traumatization, fosters trust, and allows for deeper, more effective healing. Even when trauma isn’t the primary reason for seeking therapy, a trauma-informed approach provides a more comprehensive and compassionate framework for care.
What are your rates?
Our therapists’ rates vary based on years of experience in the field and levels of training. The ranges are:
- Pre-licensed clinicians: $110-$130 per session
- Associate-licensed clinicians: $125-$150 per session
- Fully licensed clinicians: $150-$200 per session
Occasionally, your therapist may be able to offer negotiated rate options. Feel free to inquire if you are interested in working with someone on the team, but fear that finances may be barrier.
Why we do not take insurance.
RTC is an out-of-network provider. This means that we do not take insurance, but we believe this approach benefits our clients. As an out-of-network provider, we can create a superbill that many clients submit for reimbursement with their insurance company. We also accept medical savings cards.
We’ve found that working directly with our clients—without the constraints of insurance companies—leads to better outcomes. Insurance often requires a medical diagnosis, which can violate confidentiality, interfere with treatment, and limit the number of sessions available. Additionally, insurance companies may have a conflict of interest: saving money does not always allow for the best care. By choosing private pay, our clients often find that they save money and receive more personalized, effective care in the long run.
